Ģý Playmakers present Fun Home November 9-12
The Ģý Playmakers will begin their 2023-24 season with Fun Home, a musical based on the graphic novel by Alison Bechdel. Evening performances will take place in Belk Centrum on November 9,10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. followed by a matinee on November 12 at 2:30 p.m.
With music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by Lisa Kron, Fun Home is based on Alison Bechdel own experiences growing up in her family funeral home, discovering her identity as a young adult and coming to terms with her relationship with her father in the wake of his death. The original Broadway production was nominated for 12 Tony Awards and won five, including Best Musical in 2015.
I think audiences will enjoy the comedic aspects of the show and the music, which includes a mix of catchy tunes and emotional numbers, said cast member and psychology and theatre major Emma Seibert 24. Plus, it an important story everyone can relate to on some level. Almost everyone has issues with their families or struggles with their identity at some point. Sharing stories like this helps people feel less alone.
The cast includes Ģý students and Hickory community members portraying Alison at different ages alongside her family. The production is directed by theatre professor and program coordinator Lindsay Weitkamp, Ph.D., and is accompanied by a musical ensemble directed by Christopher Nigrelli, DMA, professor and coordinator of the music program at Ģý. The production team also welcomes Bill West-Davis, visiting assistant professor of theatre with a specialty in technical direction and scenic and lighting design.
The Playmakers season will continue with Noises Off by Michael Frayn in February and We Are Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom in April. Weitkamp encourages anyone with an interest in theatre to join future productions.
Something special about theatre at Ģý is that anyone is welcome to audition students, faculty, staff and community members. We invite anyone with an interest in theatre to follow our social media pages, on Instagram and on Facebook, for announcements and audition information, Weitkamp said. Were excited about the range of material well be offering in the 2023-24 season and are eager to share our passion for theatre with the campus and community.
